Bill Smith is a senior ultrasound specialist recognised worldwide especially for his pioneering work in the development of transvaginal ultrasound
imaging and promoting its clinical use especially in key areas of general gynaecology, reproductive medicine and early pregnancy assessment. He has served as a technical consultant for several of the leading ultrasound manufacturers over past decades. His work has had a major impact in terms of women’s healthcare, as well as general medical and aspects of pregnancy managements.
He has written numerous papers on clinical and technical aspects of ultrasound scanning, as well as texts for a number of books. His work has been
recognised by relevant professional bodies, particularly the British Medical Ultrasound Society.
Subsequently he was awarded Honorary Membership to the Royal Society of Medicine. In the latest King’s Birthday Honours List he received
the prestigious honour of an OBE in recognition of his Services to Women’s Healthcare.
His collaboration with leading gynaecologists resulted in the early development of contrast studies as part of (reproductive) gynaecology. This
involved the use of ultrasound investigation of the Fallopian Tubes (HSS, later termed HyCoSy) but in particular the introduction of 3D volumetric saline infusion sonohysterography. More recently, working with Canon Medical Systems (formally Toshiba) resulted in the creation of “Fly Thru” 3D rendered imaging technology. This has provided the basis for “ultrasound hysteroscopy” as an alternative to surgical hysteroscopy in relevant clinical cases.
